Color Palette Ideas for Websites: How to Build a Consistent Scheme

A website does not need dozens of colors to look professional. A small, consistent palette can make navigation clearer, strengthen a brand and give different pages a shared visual identity.

Start with one primary color

Choose a color that represents the overall character of the project. Use it for selected interface elements such as buttons, links or highlights rather than placing it everywhere.

Add supporting colors

Choose one or two supporting colors for accents and visual sections. Then add neutral colors for page backgrounds, borders and body text. Neutral colors often make the interface easier to read.

Create light and dark variations

A useful palette usually needs more than one shade of a color. Lighter variants can work for backgrounds, while darker variants can provide stronger text or borders.

Test the palette on real components

Look at your colors on headings, buttons, cards, forms and navigation. A palette that looks attractive as a row of swatches may not work well when applied to an entire interface.

Keep accessibility in mind

Make sure important text remains readable against its background. Do not communicate important information using color alone, because some visitors may have difficulty distinguishing certain colors.

Sample inspiration instead of guessing
